Revolutionizing Hope and Healing: Highlights from the Inaugural SSTN Summit

Empowered to Connect’s Safe & Secure TN (SSTN) initiative marked a pivotal moment with its first inaugural event in Chattanooga on Friday, February 21st. The atmosphere was electric as over 45 organizations gathered to engage in strategic conversations about trauma-competent implementation strategies. From juvenile justice professionals to educators, foster care advocates, nonprofit leaders, government officials, foundation representatives, caregivers, and other community stakeholders, the room was a diverse tapestry of individuals united by a common goal: creating hope and healing for children and families impacted by trauma.

Participants had the unique opportunity to connect with others serving throughout the region while also networking within their own sectors. Conversations buzzed with shared experiences, challenges, and innovative ideas, fostering a spirit of collaboration and community.

At the heart of the Summit were empowering and enlightening sessions led by Dr. Daren Jones, Associate Director of Training from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development, and Tona Ottinger, Executive Program Director of Empowered to Connect.

Both leaders created a space where participants felt seen, valued, and inspired. Their insights equipped attendees with practical, actionable steps for embedding trauma-informed practices within their organizations and spheres of influence.

The impact of the day was undeniable. SSTN’s post-training data revealed significant growth in participants’ understanding and application of TBRI® (Trust-Based Relational Intervention). Confidence soared as attendees left with not just information, but the skills and strategies to foster real change. The Summit catalyzed a deeper understanding of how trauma affects brain development and how this knowledge can shape more compassionate, effective service approaches.

One participant captured the sentiment of the day perfectly, sharing, “Everything was great!! My favorite PD all school year.”

The ripple effects of the Summit are just beginning. The skills and strategies introduced are revolutionary and have the potential to impact children, families, communities, and ultimately, the world. SSTN remains committed to supporting and equipping organizations in their journey toward creating safe, secure, and healing environments.
